Preparing Your Child for Their First Physical Exam

Thinking it is time to schedule a physical exam for your child? Also called a well-child visit, these appointments are a regular part of your child’s health care. Changes happen fast in growing children, making it necessary for you to make sure they are healthy on a regular basis. This is also the time for you to ask questions and get essential advice from a primary care professional.

Why is primary care important for children?

The fact that primary care providers can provide children with their necessary exams means most parents will choose to have their child examined by their primary care provider. Primary care doctors provide their patients with primary health care services which are essential when it comes to keeping your children healthy and happy.

A few of the more important benefits that come with seeing a primary care provider include access to preventive health services, the ability to receive a diagnosis and the ability to have any health issues managed and/or treated.

How to prepare a child for their first physical exam

The information below includes three great tips for parents which will help them prepare their child for their first physical examination appointment.

Schedule a meet-and-greet with the primary health care team

Parents can call and set up a meet-and-greet, which allows both the parent and the child to meet the team. During a meet-and-greet appointment, the team will take the child on a mini-tour, allowing them to feel more comfortable as they get more familiar with the office. The team will explain to a child what will happen during their physical examination, so there will not be any surprises.

Tell children exactly what they can expect

It is essential for parents to let their children know exactly what to expect during their first physical examination by a primary care provider. When they do so, it allows children to feel they have a little more control over the situation. Parents must include everything, as if they do not and the child has to do something unexpected, it may make the child fearful and not want to go to their next physical examination.

Roleplay

Role-playing is a great idea, as it allows children to see things from a different point of view. The parent can first play the role of the primary care professional, starting with the initial greeting and then performing a few pretend physical examinations on the child. The child can then take over the role of the professional, allowing for more of an understanding of what primary care providers do in order to take proper care of their patients.
